Accessibility is at the forefront of Philadelphia Waterborne’s programming. The majority of the learning takes place on site at schools. Waterborne never charges fees to students or their families. Partner schools are, however, asked at a minimum to help cover direct materials costs for the projects, usually with outside support (foundations, families, individual donations, government programs). These schools must also provide work-space for the duration of the project, and usually to compensate one classroom teacher who helps with programming.

To cover additional costs of instruction, transportation, etc., Waterborne operates on a sliding scale fee structure, which allows organizations with more capacity to pay (typically through state or private grants) to make up for the instructional costs of organizations with less capacity to pay. At least one of our partners receives funding through the 21st Century Leadership Grant to support their participation in this program.

Our engaged learning methodologies expose young people to a different kind of learning and thinking than they typically experience in their classrooms, opening up new ways of solving problems and engaging questions. We provide practical, technical skills that can be used in the workforce (like basic mathematics and tool use) while also digging deeper into concepts of art, design, environmental conservation, and maritime history.

Young people in our programs have to communicate with each other and work together to accomplish a big and exciting task. Separately, these impacts may not seem like much, but together, they provide opportunities that the vast majority of young people in our city will never experience due to a lack of income and access.
